CERCLL hosted several professional development webinars over the last several months, some of which are paired with additional resources for language educators. These recordings are now accessible in a playlist on our YouTube channel. By clicking on the buttons following the descriptions below, you will find the individual recordings and their additional resources.

Presented by Rebecca Aubrey (2019 ACTFL Teacher of the Year)
Learning a language is no longer just about preparing for college, but about preparing students to live in a globalized world. Thus, every student has a right to study languages and teachers need to meet their diverse needs. We typically add differentiation strategies after a lesson has been developed. This is time-consuming and disrespectful of the diversity of our students. In this webinar, participants will learn to differentiate through backwards design by individualizing proficiency targets within a common theme, empowering students to self-direct how they show their learning, and designing a variety of learning activities.

Presented by Mahmoud Azaz, Wenhao Diao, and Liudmila Klimanova (University of Arizona)
With the sudden migration to remote learning, how have instructors managed to bring beginning language classes to students—especially those languages that use non-western scripts? This webinar provides some guidance on best-practices that instructors of Arabic, Chinese and Russian have applied in remote teaching contexts at the University of Arizona.

Presented by Mariana Bertho, Aleksey Novikov, Adriana Picoral, Bruna Sommer-Farias, and Shelley Staples (University of Arizona)

Participants are introduced to the interactive Data-driven Learning (iDDL) tool based on the Data-driven Learning (DDL) approach to foreign language teaching. After this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. navigate Multilingual Academic Corpus of Assignments – Writing and Speech (MACAWS) for linguistic and/or rhetorical features relevant to their teaching context;
  2. implement Data-driven Learning (DDL) principles for inductive learning;
  3. develop iDDL pedagogical materials for their instructional contexts.

Presented by Gillian Lord, Professor and Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at The University of Florida

Dr. Lord addresses the current emphasis on online education, arguing that language educators should embrace digital tools as an integral part of their teaching. Lord suggests that “the paper-based textbook has outlived its usefulness in today’s world” and that the way we teach is deeply connected to the materials we use.

To demonstrate, she explains the theoretical underpinnings that went into the design and development of her new co-authored digital beginning Spanish textbook, Contraseña.

Presented by Margherita Berti, a doctoral student in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (SLAT) at the University of Arizona

Berti illustrates how social networks, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, can be utilized in language courses to foster intercultural competence. Pedagogical applications and practical suggestions were provided for using social networks and authentic social media with beginner and intermediate language learners. The webinar also provides information about the Social Networking Sites for Intercultural Competence website, where further resources including an e-book, online trainings, and video tutorials can be found.
