The Multimodal Online Persian Picture Dictionary is a multimedia environment in which objects and activities illustrated in theme-based images are matched with corresponding Persian words. By clicking on the items, the user can see the word written in the Persian script and listen to its pronunciation through an accompanying audio file. Images are designed to reflect everyday life in Iran today and convey some aspects of Persian culture to the user.
The initial phase of the dictionary includes basic vocabulary for describing physical appearance, daily routines, items in some everyday spaces and items in some national and religious ceremonies in Iran. The dictionary is under further development in 2024 and 2025.
The project was first funded by a CERCLL Faculty Research Fellowship in 2020, with additional support from the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) at the University of Arizona.
