A free public talk by Dr. Jia Li (Yunnan University)
Hosted by the Center for East Asian Studies and cosponsored by CERCLL, this is an IN-PERSON presentation at The University of Arizona.
This talk focuses on the language education in Yunnan, China’s southwest province bordering Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam. Dr. Jia Li will elaborate on how language learning in the borderlands create a new space for language learners to empower their transnational mobility and life prospects, and how their empowerment is ideologically mediated by social categories and power relations. The talk discusses broader issues including educational equity, social justice, and international communication.
Dr. Jia Li is a professor of critical applied sociolinguistics at Yunnan University. Her research interests include multilingualism, language in education, and digital communication.
