Consisting of 12 thematically organized units, the Advanced Intercultural Chinese language textbook is based on authentic conversations between American study abroad students and their Chinese roommates in college dorms, which came from the DormTalk corpus that was funded by CERCLL in a previous grant cycle. These conversations have been minimally edited to become the texts so that they are (a) linguistically appropriate for learners at advanced proficiency levels; (b) culturally meaningful in learners’ real-life encounters in the L2 environment; (c) thematically conducive for raising cross-cultural awareness and accepting cultural diversity. Each chapter further includes supplementary reading and multimodal materials selected from the sinophone world, providing further insights into these cultural phenomena while scaffolding students into an awareness of genre differences between conversations and written texts. Sample units have already been piloted in the advanced curriculum by the research team, and all texts will be launched this Fall as Open Educational Resource.
