Developed by Kristen Michelson (Texas Tech University) and Bruna Sommer-Farias (Michigan State University), Multiliteracies Language Teaching in World Language Classrooms is a video-based online resource designed to support educators in bringing multiliteracies pedagogy into practice. It provides Open Educational professional development resources for world language teachers and teacher educators of less commonly taught languages--currently Arabic, Japanese, Polish and Portuguese.
Each video features selected classroom lesson segments alongside a reflective interview with the teacher, offering insights into instructional choices, lesson design, and classroom implementation. The featured lessons demonstrate how teachers can support learners in:
- Interpreting and producing multimodal genres
- Engaging in dynamic, multilingual literacy practices
- Understanding how language and other semiotic resources both reflect and shape culture
- Developing the linguistic and symbolic resources needed for interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational communication
This initiative was developed in response to a longstanding challenge faced by language educators: translating theoretical knowledge into classroom practice. By providing authentic examples of multiliteracies teaching in action, these videos offer practical models that can help educators implement multiliteracies approaches into their own world language classrooms.
